The Gospel According to Luke is an instrumental hip-hop record rooted in boom-bap drums, layered samples, and texture.

At a time when much of instrumental hip hop feels rushed, looped, or disposable, this project slows things down. The focus is on feel, weight, and intention—drums that knock, samples that carry history, and arrangements that give each track room to exist.

The music draws from the golden era without trying to recreate it. Instead, it carries that spirit forward, grounded in craft rather than nostalgia.

This isn’t background music and it isn’t content.
It’s a record meant to be heard as a whole.

Behind the Beats

Luke Ellington is a West Coast music producer who has spent over two decades working within hip hop as a craft, not a trend.

In a landscape where much of the music is rushed, disposable, and driven by algorithms, his work is rooted in intention—drawing from the era when records were built to last and the process mattered as much as the result.

His production has earned gold certification for his work on Switchfoot’s The Legend of Chin, and his career has included collaborations with artists who value musicianship and depth, including Anderson .Paak, Battlecat, BJ the Chicago Kid, King Thurz, Gonzo, Yukmouth, G Perico, Terrace Martin, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, Jimetta Rose, and Kamasi Washington.

Today, Luke focuses on creating instrumental hip-hop albums released independently—records built with care, meant to be listened to front to back, and owned rather than rented.
